Thinking of changing or retrofitting your commercial lighting? Take a look at the benefits converting to LED lighting.
LED Lighting: Higher ROI
A commercial lighting retrofit from older lighting types to LEDs will allow you to reduce energy usage and save on utility bills. On average, LED lighting uses 75% less energy than traditional lighting, such as incandescent or high intensity discharge (HID) lamps. Less labor and operational costs also make this investment an excellent choice. Let’s look at some of the reasons that lighting your business with LEDs makes so much sense.
LEDs are energy efficient
Incandescent bulbs produce light by passing electricity through a filament until it is so hot it produces light, using about 95% of the energy for heat and only 5% as light. CFLs are slightly better at about 80%. LEDs produce about 15% light from their energy source andthe rest is dissipated as heat. Traditional lighting, as noted, is approximately 5% light and the rest as heat. It is the decrease in power consumption from traditional lighting to LED lighting that leads to less heat generation. A 60W incandescent is typically replaced with a roughly 8W LED. By passing less power through the fixture, it will generate less heat.
LEDs last much longer than other lighting
The typical lifespan of an LED is between 50k and 100k operating hours. Compare this to the average lifespan of an incandescent bulb (1,000 hours) or a CFL bulb (10k to 15k hours) and you’ll see what an incredible savings you can expect in bulb replacement alone.
LED Lighting is safer
A number of factors make LEDs the safer choice for lighting. The first thing that comes to mind when you think of commercial lighting is how hot the bulbs can be. LEDs emit dramatically less heat, which prevents combustion and accidents, as well as makes them more efficient because less energy is used for heat and more for light emission. Indirectly, they can mean a safer workplace because workers are changing bulbs much less frequently.
LED Lights are smaller
These tiny devices range from 3 to 8mm in length and can be used alone or as part of an array. Because they are so compact, they can be used in areas which are too tight for traditional light bulbs. Yet, even the smallest LED light gives off a great deal of directional lighting, opening up the possibilities for innumerable new uses.
LED Lighting requires less maintenance
Other types of lighting need to be replaced every year or so, and often require someone climbing a ladder or reaching high to do so. LED lights can last ten years or more, meaning less time spent replacing them and less risk of a fall or injury. This equals a direct savings on labor and operational costs.
LED Lighting is a directional light source
They emit in a specific 180 degree direction, using energy more efficiently to produce superior illumination. Other lighting, such as incandescent or CFL, emits heat and light in all directions with less efficiency and more loss of light. This means better lighting with less energy consumption with LEDs.
LED Lighting is better for the environment
Not only are LEDs free from mercury, which is dangerous to humans and the environment, they also last much longer so they produce less waste. Fluorescent lighting and mercury vapor lighting contain mercury which can contaminate the air and water if the lamp is broken. They require special handling for disposal while LED lighting does not. LEDs can be disposed of in a regular trash or sometimes recycled.
LED Lighting works well in any weather
They perform without much, if any, degradation in any weather – even severe cold or hot temperatures. Other types of lighting, such as fluorescent, are unable to operate in colder weather at all. Traditional bulbs also wear out quickly or break when there is a drop in the temperature due to excess emission of heat. LEDs produce considerably less heat and are well suited for changes in the weather.
